A man belonging to Bryant's Cove, by the name Esau NOSEWORTHY,
recently met with a sad and sudden death. He went out in the morning to look at
his herring nets, in company with a young lad. Noseworthy landed on an islet off
the mainland for the purpose, we understand, of getting a shot or two at the
sea-birds. The lad left with the punt after receiving instructions to come back
on hearing the report of the gun. A considerable time having elapsed, and the
expected signal not having been heard, the lad grew uneasy, and going to an
eminence where he could command a view of the island, he saw the deceased
gesticulating with his hands, as if imploring assistance. Becoming alarmed, the
lad ran back, and, procuring the assistance of some men, returned to the island
to find the unfortunate man prostrate on the ground quite dead. A fit is
supposed to have been the cause of death. Some years before, it appears, the
deceased had suffered sun-stroke whilst cutting wood on Belle Isle.

Sad and Fatal Accident - A respectable resident of
Bryant's Cove, named John YETMAN, came to a very tragic end on the morning of
Saturday last. Mr. Y., it appears, had occasion to go down to his stage for the
purpose of procuring a bog of hay. Instead, however, of proceeding directly
thither, he first walked over to a well which was situated near the edge of a
steep cliff. The snow was covered with a coating of "glitter," and it is thought
that in making his way across to the stage (which was nearly directly opposite),
the unfortunate man must have lost his footing, and slid headforemost over the
declivity down upon the rocks in the land-wash beneath. He was found a short
time after by his cousin, who had to be lowered by a rope in order to reach him.
An examination showed that the injuries sustained would soon cause his

- A Sad Accident - A very melancholy accident occurred
on Wednesday evening last. A party of four Cupids men, dealers of Mr. John
STRAPP of this town, were returning to their homes in their little craft. When
about two miles off Bryants Cove Point, and while in the act of "staying" one of
the sails "fouled," upsetting the boat, throwing all its occupants into the
water. Sad to relate, two of them were drowned, the remainder saved their lives
by clinging to the capsized boat. The names of the drowned men are John HARTERY
and William FOWLER, senior. We deeply sympathise with the families thus suddenly
bereaved of their comfort and stay.

Morgan
"The oral history of the MORGAN family in Port de Grave states that George
MORGAN, was a bosun on a naval ship who defected to
settle in Port de Grave in 1715. He was a former resident of Wales. A direct
descendant is Dr. Moses Morgan, who was the third president of Memorial
University. His grandfather was Jacob MORGAN who moved there to Bryants Cove,
after becoming a ship's captain. Both Moses and his brother Herbert became
Newfoundland Rhodes Scholars. Herbert became a justice in the Newfoundland
Supreme Court of Appeal.

- Harbour Grace Regatta
In the Regatta held July 26th, 1898, three boats were to
contest, the Edith, Myrtle, and the Hettie. Only two of these boats were allowed
to contest. The Hettie was to be rowed but owing a ruling by the committee that
no crews were to be taken outside Harbour Grace in the Tradesmen race, this boat
was withdrawn. The best time of the day was recorded in the Fishermen Race by a
Bryant's Cove crew against the Island Men with a time of 10:45. In the dory race
the R. Grant won the three regular races again the Merrimac and Grab All. Harvey
Pike in the Merrimac won a silver watch for a single-handed dory race.
